Guest Feature: aMPV Spray Vaccination Checklist

As part of our commitment to supporting flock health and biosecurity, we’re pleased to share a guest resource from Best Veterinary Solutions (BVS). This practical checklist, developed by BVS veterinarians and technical specialists, outlines key steps for successful aMPV spray vaccination. This is a timely tool as turkey growers all over North America prepare for the high-risk fall and winter seasons.

1. Materials

  • Live AMPV Vaccine
  • Distilled Water
  • Spray equipment
  • Backup power (battery or gas)
  • Spray stabilizer
  • Waterline stabilizer
  • Dye
  • Isopropyl alcohol (70%)
  • PPE: eye protection, face mask, hearing protection

3. Mixing Vaccine

  • Confirm spray equipment is clean
  • Add distilled water + vaccine stabilizer to sprayer
  • Calculate and prepare 1 dose/bird
    • (round up: 11,500 birds = 12,000 doses)
  • With distilled water, dissolve freeze-dried vaccine into vial and pour into sprayer
  • Rinse vials again with distilled water and pour into spray tank
  • Add dye if not pre-mixed with stabilizer

2. Pre-Mixing Prep

  • Review “Dry Run” plan (water, walking path, spray settings)
  • Sanitize drinker lines
  • Add buffer to drinking water - (1 pack per 256 gal)

4. Application

  • Close curtains in curtain-sided barns
  • Turn off fans and heaters
  • Spray vaccine using pre-planned walk pattern & spray settings
  • Turn on fans and heaters
  • Re-open curtains

5. Clean-Up

  • Rinse outside of sprayer with water
  • Rinse interior with distilled water
  • Run distilled water through nozzle until empty
  • Let equipment air dry completely before storing
