Impactful Research on Avian Metapneumovirus Showcased at NTF

Avian Metapneumovirus (aMPV) continues to be a significant concern for the US turkey industry, impacting bird health and economic results. Addressing this challenge requires both innovative research and practical solutions.

At a recent industry event, the annual National Turkey Federation Convention, two experts from our team delivered insightful presentations on the latest research and management of aMPV.

aMPV Vaccination in Europe

Beata Ogonowska-Woźniak, DVM focused on the timeline of aMPV vaccination in Europe. Although aMPV is a relatively new challenge for the US turkey industry, the European market has decades of experience in managing this disease. Her presentation explored research trials, vaccine strategies, and key learnings that can be applied to members of the US turkey industry.

Innovative Controlled Exposure Trials

Dr. Evan VanBeusekom explored research on controlled exposure trials as a possible way to manage aMPV in commercial flocks. With the lack of current availability of field booster vaccines, controlled exposure offers an alternative approach to disease control. He shared results from trials with five flocks, showing how this method could help build immunity and reduce the virus's impact in turkey flocks.
